Gastroenterologists treat conditions of the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver and pancreas. Common reasons to see one are acidity that lasts for weeks, trouble swallowing, jaundice, fatty liver with signs of damage, blood in the stool, and a lasting change in bowel habit. Most people first see a general physician, who manages common problems and refers when needed. Heavy bleeding or black stools need emergency care.
