Oncologists diagnose and treat cancer. Medical oncologists use medicines such as chemotherapy, radiation oncologists use radiotherapy, and surgical oncologists operate. Common reasons to see one are a confirmed or suspected cancer, a biopsy result or a second opinion on a treatment plan. Most people are referred by a general physician, surgeon or gynaecologist after first tests, though a person with a diagnosis can go directly.
