Quick answer. No reliable national average for private angioplasty exists. NPPA caps a drug eluting stent at Rs 39,186 before GST. CGHS pays Rs 66,980 to Rs 97,000 at NABH hospitals, excluding the stent. Those are a price cap and a scheme rate, not private prices. Ask for a written estimate.

Most pages on this topic quote a wide range with no source. Stents have a public price limit, printed in the Gazette, so this guide starts there. Every figure below is one we could open and trace. Where nobody publishes a figure, we say so.

This is general information, not medical or financial advice. If you have chest pain or think you may be having a heart attack, seek emergency care first. Cost questions can wait.

Scheme rates are what the scheme pays an empanelled hospital for the package, not what a private patient is charged. An NPPA ceiling is the legal maximum price of an implant or device, not the cost of the operation. Private prices are as published by the hospital on the date shown and usually exclude implants, extra nights and complications. Always ask the hospital for a written estimate.

Read the columns separately. A scheme rate is what that scheme pays an empanelled hospital for its own members. It is not a price a hospital has to offer you as a private patient, and it does not tell you what a private bill will be.

The stent price cap

NPPA has revised the stent ceiling repeatedly since 2018, most recently in line with the Wholesale Price Index. The current order is S.O. 1587(E), published in the Gazette on 25 Mar 2026 and effective from 1 Apr 2026. It adds 0.64956% for 2025 over 2024.

  • The drug eluting cap also covers bioresorbable and biodegradable stents, so these are not a separate price tier under this order.
  • The caps are per stent. A procedure using two stents can carry two stent charges.
  • GST may be added only if it has actually been paid or is payable on the ceiling price.
  • The order says manufacturers who do not comply are liable to deposit the overcharged amount with interest.

The cap covers the stent, not the procedure. Your estimate should show the stent as its own line, so you can compare it with the ceiling. We read the Gazette notice through a copy on Medical Dialogues.

What the scheme rates tell you

CGHS

The Central Government Health Scheme list dated 3 Oct 2025, effective 13 Oct 2025, assumes a semi-private ward. Its rates change with four things:

  • City. Tier II rates are 10% lower than Tier I, and Tier III rates 20% lower. Tier I is Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad.
  • Accreditation. In a Tier I non-NABH hospital, PTCA is Rs 82,450 with a closure device and Rs 71,166 without.
  • Hospital type. In a Tier I super speciality hospital, it is Rs 1,11,550 with a closure device and Rs 96,284 without.
  • Ward. A general ward entitlement takes 5% off the package. A private ward adds 5%.

The package allows up to 3 days for elective angioplasty. Guidewires, catheters and other consumables are treated as part of it. Stents are paid on top at CGHS ceiling rates, which the memorandum does not print. A drug eluting balloon used instead of a stent is paid at the NPPA rate or the invoice, whichever is less.

For scale only: Rs 97,000 plus one stent at the NPPA ceiling comes to Rs 1,36,186 before GST. That is our arithmetic, not a CGHS figure, and not a price anyone has quoted.

PM-JAY

PM-JAY is cashless for eligible families, within a Rs 5,00,000 cover. Its HBP 2022 list names one PTCA package that includes the diagnostic angiogram. The Uttarakhand State Health Agency copy shows stent amounts of Rs 9,373 for bare metal and Rs 34,128 for drug eluting.

The published copies are not identical. The Haryana copy shows Rs 52,800 for Tier 1, with stents at Rs 8,885 and Rs 32,352. NHA’s own download pages did not load for us, so we cannot say which applies in your state. Ask your State Health Agency or the hospital’s Ayushman desk. Both copies show stent amounts below the current NPPA caps.

Tamil Nadu NHIS

Tamil Nadu’s NHIS 2026 list shows PTCA with a single stent, with the procedure rate rising 10% at each hospital grade from C to A1. The implant limit stays at Rs 30,000.

What moves a private bill

We have no sourced figure for how much each of these adds to a private bill, so we are not putting a number on them. Your cardiologist decides what is needed, and that may only become clear during the procedure.

  • Number and type of stents. Each stent adds its own charge, and the two caps differ by about Rs 28,424.
  • Closure device. CGHS pays Rs 13,275 more at the Tier I NABH rate when one is used.
  • Imaging and add-ons. CGHS lists catheter costs separately: IVUS Rs 55,000, FFR Rs 33,000 and intracoronary OCT Rs 65,000, each before GST, with the procedure charge inside PTCA. These are CGHS amounts, not private prices.
  • Planned or emergency. No traceable figure compares the two. An emergency can also mean more time in intensive care. For reference, the CGHS standard ICU rate is Rs 5,400 a day.
  • Room, city and NABH status. CGHS builds these into its rates. A private hospital is not bound by those percentages and sets its own tariff.

What is often left out

The hospital ranges in our table do not say what they include. Ask directly about each of these:

  • The stents, and whether the quote assumes one or more
  • The diagnostic angiogram, if it was done separately first. CGHS lists it at Rs 10,720 to Rs 13,400 at NABH hospitals, and PM-JAY includes it in the PTCA package
  • Balloons, guidewires, closure devices and imaging catheters
  • ICU or cardiac care unit days beyond the package
  • Treatment of complications, and any standby surgical charge
  • Medicines after discharge and follow-up visits

How to ask for a written estimate

For a planned procedure, you usually have time to ask. Speak to the billing desk and request it in writing. A useful estimate states:

  1. The package price, with the stent shown apart from it
  2. The price per additional stent, with brand, type and GST
  3. Room category and the number of days included
  4. The charge for each possible add-on, such as a closure device or IVUS
  5. What happens to the price if the plan changes during the procedure
  6. How long the estimate stays valid

Afterwards, ask for the stent sticker or carton details with your bill. PM-JAY requires hospitals to submit these with claims, and they are useful for your records too. You can look for cardiologists through find a doctor and our cardiology page. Our order never depends on payment.

Schemes and insurance

If you have CGHS or PM-JAY cover, confirm that the hospital is empanelled for cardiology and ask how emergency admission works under your scheme. See schemes and insurance for an overview.

With private health insurance, terms vary by policy, so read your own. Check any waiting period for heart conditions or existing illnesses, any room rent limit, and the cashless network. For a planned procedure, send the written estimate to your insurer or TPA first. In an emergency, ask the hospital’s insurance desk to start the request after admission.

Common questions

Does the stent cap mean my angioplasty costs about Rs 39,000?

No. That is the ceiling for one drug eluting stent before GST. The procedure, the hospital stay and other items are charged separately.

Is the CGHS rate the price I will pay as a private patient?

No. It is what CGHS pays empanelled hospitals for its members. A hospital can charge a private patient differently.

What is the average cost in my city?

We have no reliable public figure for a city average. Hospitals do not report what patients paid in a form anyone can check, so a written estimate is the better guide.
